Naturforsch. 49c, 343-351 (1994); received February 4, 1994 Phaseolus vulgaris L., Plant x Bacterium Interaction, Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli, Rhizobium tropici, Symbiotic Effectivity Four varieties of P. vulgaris L. were tested for their symbiotic nitrogen fixation effectivity in combination with nine different strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli and Rhizobium tropici. Plants were grown under controlled conditions and harvested 23 days after planting. Acetylene reducing activity, total N-content and dry weight of individual plant components were determined. Significant differences due to plant x bacterium interaction were assessed by ANOVA, especially for the total nodule mass per plant and the acetylene reducing activity per nodule dry weight. Data for acetylene reducing activity per plant corre lated highly with the corresponding data for the total N-content. The comparison of the total N-content in symbiotically grown plants, lacking supply of mineral N, with plants luxuriously supplied with mineral N (relative N-accumulation rate) revealed high values (between 60% and 70% of maximal N-uptake) for some symbiotically active plant/bacterium combinations for this early developmental stage of the symbiosis N2 fixation potential for such symbioses.

Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation Efficacy of Rhizobium fredii with Phaseolus vulgaris Genotypes.

Phaseolus plant introduction (PI) genotypes (consisting of 684 P. vulgaris, 26 P. acutifolius, 39 P. lunatus, and 5 P. coccineus accessions) were evaluated for their ability to form effective symbioses with strains of six slow-growing (Bradyrhizobium) and four fast-growing (Rhizobium fredii) soybean rhizobia. Of the 684 P. vulgaris genotypes examined, three PIs were found to form effective nitr...

Colonization of Phaseolus vulgaris nodules by Agrobacterium-like strains.

Non-nodulating Agrobacterium-like strains identified among root nodule isolates of common bean were labeled with gusA, a reporter gene encoding beta-glucuronidase (GUS). Bean plants were then co-inoculated with an infective Rhizobium strain and labeled transconjugants of Agrobacterium-like strains. Blue staining of nodules showed that Agrobacterium-like strains were able to colonize these symbi...

Effect of genotypes-Rhizobium-environment interaction on nodulation and productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in eastern Ethiopia

Background: Effectiveness of Rhizobium inoculation is determined by common bean genotypes. Environmental factors also affect common bean genotypes-Rhizobium-symbiosis. The effect of common bean genotypes-Rhizobium strains-environment interaction on nodulation and common bean production is not well studied. Three genotypes (Dursitu, Gofta, and Kufanzik) and eight selected isolates of common bean...

Effect of Co-Inoculation with Mycorrhiza and Rhizobia on the Nodule Trehalose Content of Different Bean Genotypes

Studies on Rhizobium-legume symbiosis show that trehalose content in nodules under drought stress correlates positively with an increase in plant tolerance to this stress. Fewer reports describe trehalose accumulation in mycorrhiza where, in contrast with rhizobia, there is no flux of carbohydrates from the microsymbiont to the plant. However, the trehalose dynamics in the Mycorrhiza-Rhizobium-...
